Mazatlán Carnival: How much was spent and recovered?

MAZATLAN. – Preliminarily, the International Carnival of Mazatlán 2023 “Dejavú, 125 years of tradition” had a total cost of 52 million pesos… although half was recovered.

Raúl Rico González, director of the Mazatlán Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art, reported that the budget approved for this edition was 54 million, 19 million less than those spent on the 2022 Carnival, which became the most expensive in history according to data from Culture.

In the 2019 edition, 64 million 990 thousand pesos were spent, while in 2018 around 48 million 757 thousand pesos were invested.

The coronations of the King, Queen of the Floral Games, Queen of Carnival and Children left as a result a total of 18 million 435 thousand 800 pesos collected. On average, 14,000 people attended each one of them; this data is only for tickets sold.

12 million pesos were spent on contracts for the artists that performed during the Carnival: Edén Muñoz, Gloria Gaynor, Banda MS and Jesse & Joy.

Regarding the tickets sold in Olas Altas, a total of 8 million 519 thousand 630 pesos was collected.

On Friday, February 17, 17,043 people attended; on Saturday, February 18, there were 49,906 for the Naval Combat; On Sunday, February 19, 13,893 people attended, this day the influx dropped due to the first parade. On Carnival Monday there were 19,594 people and something that surprised was that on Carnival Tuesday there was a historic influx of 22,273 attendees.

Rico González explained that, adding what was collected, the Mazatlán Carnival 2023 recovered 27 million pesos, which means that the party cost 25 million pesos.

In terms of economic benefits, the authorities estimate that 900 million pesos were collected throughout the municipality.

Mayor Édgar Augusto González Zataráin indicated that the results of the security operations were positive. White balance was registered, not only in the Carnival areas, but there were no violent acts throughout the municipality, which indicates that the security strategies worked.

“We had a white balance, there are normal weekends that had major incidents, and this is a success in terms of public safety. Despite having little time for its preparation, we met the expectations and from my point of view it was fulfilled with the Carnival, ”he said.
