The email was turned over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since January 10, the authorities reported.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations already has the letter by which José Refugio Rodríguez, lawyer for Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, requested the intervention of the Government of Mexico so that the drug trafficker returns to Mexico.
The email was received on January 10 and was forwarded to the Foreign Ministry “because it is a matter within its competence,” the Mexican Embassy in the United States reported via Twitter.
“No letter was received from Mr. Loera,” he stressed.
Earlier, Rodríguez accused that his client is subjected to “psychological torture” in ADX Florence, the maximum-security prison where the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel is being held.
“He doesn’t see the sun, the food is of terrible quality, there is no health; He was sick for some teeth and instead of curing them, they took them out so he wouldn’t be bothering them,” he said in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva for Radio Formula.
The lawyer mentioned that he wrote an email to Esteban Moctezuma, Mexico’s ambassador in the United States, although he stated that he never received an acknowledgment of receipt.
El Chapo wants to return home.
Rodríguez commented that ‘El Chapo’ feels “abandoned” by the government because, he explained, there is a treaty between Mexico and the US, by which the Mexican authorities must review the status of Guzmán Loera every six months, an action that has not occurred.
El Chapo pointed out that the government of Peña Nieto committed violations of due process during his extradition to the United States, for which he asked the government of López Obrador to repair these damages and seek “the channels” that allow his return to Mexico to fulfill his sentence.
President López Obrador was questioned about it at the end of his morning conference this Tuesday.
“I have not seen it (the topic), but I will” was his response.
‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is serving a life sentence (with an additional 30 years in prison) after being found guilty of ten drug-related charges, the main one being maintaining an ongoing criminal enterprise.
