Who is Edgar González Zatarain? The substitute mayor of Mazatlan

The former secretary of the City Council has a long history in the political life of Sinaloa; However, he is also involved in the case of the millionaire purchase of luminaries and even faces a lawsuit for sexual harassment.

This Wednesday, October 26, the State Congress appointed Edgar Augusto González Zataráin as substitute mayor of Mazatlán (2022-2024) after the resignation of Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres.

Until Tuesday, October 25 at 12:20 p.m. he served as Secretary of the City Council and after the departure of the “Chemist” he remained in charge of the Office of the President. Just 27 hours later he was appointed deputy mayor .

But, who is the new president of Mazatlan?

The now municipe is 51 years old, his marital status is married and he is the father of a family. He has a degree in Communication Sciences and Economics from the Autonomous University of Sinaloa. He has a Master’s degree in Education from Universidad Pacífico Norte.

From 1999 to 2001 he was coordinator of the social programs of the Secretary of Social Development of the State Government in the southern zone.

Between 2002 and 2003 he held positions in the Mazatlán City Council in the Secretariat of the Presidency and was director of Social Welfare.

From 2005 to 2006 he was a representative of SEPLADE in the southern zone of Sinaloa and from 2011 to 2013 he was mayor of El Rosario.

From 2014 to 2016, he served as an advisor for Conversion Programs of the Investment Unit of the State Government and from 2018 to 2021 he was a local deputy of the LXIII Legislature for Electoral District 24, a position he reached after being nominated by the Party of the Democratic Revolution.

During his time in the State Congress, he was a member with voice of the Political Coordination Board, president of the Fisheries Commission, secretary of the Communications and Public Works Commission, member of the Constitutional Points and Governance Commission, member of the Commission Library, Parliamentary Culture and Editorial Affairs.

González Zataráin and the luminaries case

Much has been said that González Zataráin did not sign the public record 87/2022 of the Acquisitions Committee, in which the requirement was made for the 2,139 luminaires purchased for more than 400 million pesos from the Azteca Lighting company, supposedly because they did not attended said session; However, there is a document that he did sign and it is the contract, OM-UA-145/2022, which was held just a few hours after the session, on March 2, 2022 .

Benítez Torres is now the only defendant in the luminaries case; however, in this matter all those who participated in the millionaire contract with Azteca Lighting are responsible.

Complaint for sexual harassment

Edgar Zataráin also faces a criminal lawsuit for sexual harassment towards a former municipal official, this arose as a result of statements made by the former secretary of the City Council, in mid-June, for the collection of 111 million pesos demanded by the Arhe Group for interest in the Nafta case.

But what does one thing have to do with the other? It turns out that the person who pointed out González Zataráin for this alleged crime is Cielo Rosa Muncharraz Elías, a former City Council worker in the Department of Legal Affairs, a position she held from 2019 to 2021, when she joined as legal advisor to the aforementioned group, precisely when in the Benítez Torres administration paid the amount of 141 million pesos for the NAFTA case.
