The storm surge comes from the strong winds that tropical storm Roslyn is generating in the Pacific and is expected to increase to a hurricane.

MAZATLAN.- Local citizens and visitors will have to be very careful if they plan to go to the beach this weekend, due to the presence of the storm “Roslyn” that is expected to evolve into a hurricane 2, as it is expected that this Saturday it will begin to record storm surge in Sinaloa. Alejandra Méndez Girón, coordinator of the National Meteorological Service, said that it is estimated that this phenomenon will occur mainly in the southern part of the entity and will reach Nayarit.

He indicated that a storm surge is expected mainly on the coast of Nayarit and the southern area of Sinaloa.

Méndez Girón commented that according to today’s latest forecast on the trajectory of “Roslyn”, the state that will suffer the greatest damage will be Nayarit, but that Sinaloa will not escape the rains, winds and waves of this meteorological phenomenon.

“The state that will suffer the greatest effects will be Nayarit, but the diameter of the system is 500 kilometers and the thick band in the southeast is the one that will affect the western part of Michoacán and cover Colima; We expect several damages in different states. If a trough is over Sinaloa, it will pull ‘Roslyn,’ placing Sinaloa as a shock point,” he said.

Said storm surge is an abnormal increase in water generated by a storm or cyclone, which occurs above the astronomical forecast tide; it is the direct entry of water to the coast and not precisely caused by high waves; According to the SMN report, the storm surge is the difference between the water levels, it does not have a reference level.

” Storm surge is primarily caused by strong winds from a hurricane or tropical storm and can penetrate well inland,” he said.

On the other hand, he highlighted the importance of monitoring the development of the phenomenon and being aware of the levels in the Picacho dam, which is a free outlet in the state and has a filling percentage of 100 percent.

The same will be done with the rivers, although the greatest impact is estimated in the state of Nayarit, including Acaponeta and San Pedro, which are not regulated by dams and a significant increase is observed in a short time.

Mazatlan on green alert: PC

The tropical storm “Roslyn” presents some possibilities of increasing its wind speed during the next few hours, until it evolves into a category 1 hurricane, said the coordinator of Municipal Civil Protection, Eloy Ruiz Gastélum.

“There are many possibilities that their wind speed will increase, reaching category 1 in the next 24 hours, it is estimated that it will make landfall on Sunday, October 23, in the vicinity of Sinaloa and Nayarit,” he explained.

The PC coordinator pointed out that rain of 50 to 75 millimeters is expected in Mazatlan, rains very similar to the last ones that have occurred in the port, and although Mazatlan is on green alert, it is important to be vigilant.

On the other hand, he exhorted society not to take the garbage out into the streets at least this weekend and to keep it inside their houses, since it is a way to prevent flooding; he made it clear that the hurricane season ends on November 30.

Escuinapa takes preventive measures

The coordinator of Civil Protection in Escuinapa, Román Toledo Bustamante, indicated that they are already taking preventive actions in the face of the approach of the meteorological phenomenon “Roslyn”, for the activation of temporary shelters and to carry out a correct evacuation, if necessary, in the next few hours. .

The temporary shelters will tentatively be set up for Saturday, but it all depends on the trajectory that this phenomenon follows, because it is still premature to say that it will make landfall in the southern part of Sinaloa.

“It is a phenomenon that is very erratic, it has changed its trajectory four times, so the basis of everything, as has always been said, is prevention, that it does not catch us off guard and in that sense, vulnerable,” he concluded.
