MAZATLAN. – Carmen Elizondo, 86 years old, originally from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, goes out to work every day of the week; she sells jellies and embroidered napkins to survive.
For 5 years he has been selling “mosaic” jellies outside a famous clothing store that is located right in the center of the city. Carmen suffers from different illnesses that do not allow her to walk much, which is why she asks her neighbors for help so that they ask for an “Uber” and be able to go to her work point.
And although on many occasions she has been questioned as to why she continues to work at 86, she always answers the same: necessity, she does it to survive and support her daughter, who suffers from osteoporosis and cannot walk or fend for herself. same.
Despite being elderly, she says she is grateful to God for giving her the opportunity to continue being self-sufficient.
The preparation of these jellies is carried out with her daughter, who helps her make them a day before they are sold.
Every day he goes out with a cooler full of jellies to head to the center of the city. She arrives directly to settle on the sidewalk looking for shade, takes out some jellies to show them and from there the sale of her begins.
The jellies have a cost of 20 pesos, sometimes they sell all of them, but there are days when the sale is nil and this worries Carmen since due to her age and her illnesses she cannot get on a truck and has to return with pneumonia. to your house. So if there is no sale, there is no money to return it.
“My daughter is in need, I have to go to work because my children don’t help me much and the daughter who lives with me is sick, she can’t walk. I make jellies to make a little money to survive… there are days when nothing is sold, but there are others where it is, and that’s when I thank God.”
Jellies are not always the only product she has, sometimes she sells napkins embroidered by herself.
