Mazatlán’s Mercado Pino Suárez celebrates 123 years

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- The José María Pino Suárez municipal market is celebrating, as it celebrates 123 years of its foundation and for the second consecutive year there was no celebration as such.

This supply center is an architectural jewel not only for Mazatlan but at the national level where it is placed as one of the signs of history and culture, considering the type of structure of the property and the time during which it has remained. with open doors at the service of society.

Despite having long tablecloths, the pandemic is still an obstacle for merchants to celebrate as they would like.

Market history

On May 5, 1899, the Manuel Romero Rubio Market opened its doors for the first time in Mazatlán, known today as Mercado Pino Suárez, a name decreed until February 14, 1915 in honor of the Vice President of Mexico, José María Pino Suárez, who was assassinated along with Francisco I. Madero a year after visiting Mazatlán in 1913.

The Municipal Market of Mazatlán “Pino Suárez” was designed and built by Mr. Alejandro Loubet, built in iron and steel and based on the Art Nouveau style, using the same techniques that were used 7 years earlier in the construction of the Eiffel Tower.

This work marked the history of Mazatlan, placing it as the most progressive center of commerce and industry in the country.
