Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- There are works by the Ministry of Economy focused on carrying out the mezcal project, after San Ignacio, Concordia, Mazatlán, and Rosario received the denomination of origin, and where there are more than five thousand hectares already planted for years, they have been producing ‘agave distillate’ that is marketed at uncompetitive prices to companies in Jalisco.

“Around five businessmen from Sinaloa and two from Jalisco are interested in this issue of the mezcal denomination, in addition, there are a good number of small producers in Sinaloa and five large-scale producers to offer the products to larger companies,” said Gaxiola Coppel.

Javier Gaxiola Coppel, head of the agency, commented that with this certification, Sinaloa’s agave growers will now be able to offer their distillates at a competitive price, but even better, they will be able to establish companies and sell Sinaloan mezcal, even, he revealed that there is interest from five of them who want to grow their vision to place their brands in international markets.

“So this is an opportunity to once again increase the hectareage, for now to make an industry, apart from that industry, it is work for the areas of Mazatlán to the south, currently there are four municipalities that remain with the appellation of origin, so It is a very good economic, cultural and tourist opportunity for Sinaloa.”

The state official stressed that mezcal, at the international level, is growing faster than tequila consumption, which is already reaching its maturity, and that mezcal is also healthier, if consumed, obviously responsibly.

He pointed out that this mezcal project brings with it a tourist theme since it could generate an offer similar to that of Jalisco and its magical town of Tequila, which would generate greater spills for the entity since this would mean at least one day more than stay in Mazatlan.

He added that this alternative crop will help small producers obtain profits by setting up factories, it also has a greater possibility of developing in the southern region, because it is a production that does not require much water, due to the dry region, in addition, in all case the culmination of the works in the Picachos and Santa María dams, would benefit.

The Council for the Development of Sinaloa, Codesin, and the Agrifood Information Service, SIAP, have a record with a cutoff of 2020, of 5,797 hectares planted with agave in the four aforementioned municipalities.

In accordance with articles 161 and 162 of the Industrial Property Law, the Federal Government has granted the Mezcal denomination of origin to certain regions of the states of Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Aguascalientes, Morelos, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa

Mezcal is the generic product of the alcoholic beverage distilled from different species of maguey known as agave, harvested in Mexico.

The denomination of origin of mezcal was granted for the first time in 1994.

Mezcals are part of the Mexican culture, and it is the result of the species of agave used, the climate, the fermentation process, the distillation technique, and the container in which it rests.

The species of maguey with which mezcal is produced are chosen primarily for their ability to store large amounts of sugar in the stems.

There are 23 known species of agave with which mezcal can be prepared, which can come from the exploitation of only one or from the mixture of alcohol from several of them.
