2021

The show is organized by the Artisans Meeting, starting at 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the crafts headquarters.

MAZATLAN. – A lot of color, ceremonial music and dance, is what will be experienced this Sunday at the Artisans Meeting, where there will be a demonstration of the Guelaguetza de Oaxaca for the Mazatlecos.

Leonel Felipe Sánchez, a member of the artisans’ committee, explained that this demonstration is carried out in each venue where they are presented, because in addition to bringing crafts to sell, they seek to give their visitors that plus.

“We have the Guelaguetza of Oaxaca, with the representation of the 7 regions of the state, with costumes, dance, music, all traditional for the people who visit us,” he declared.

What is the Guelaguetza?

It is one of the most representative celebrations of Mexican culture, and is originally from Oaxaca. The word Guelaguetza means “offering”, it comes from the word “guendalezaa”, which represents the action of giving, but it is also called locally as the “Monday party on the hill”.

The origin of this tradition dates back to pre-Hispanic times, being a ritual towards the gods, which is why they have always been important dates for Oaxacans. Over the years the celebration has evolved, becoming the party that is known today.

“The word guelaguetza means ‘to give’ or ‘to present’, following the ancestral and ceremonial culture as a way of giving thanks, in this case, those from Oaxaca approach it in a larger, cultural way,” said Leonel Felipe.

This Oaxacan ceremony is even divided into days. It begins with a parade with “chinas oaxaqueñas”, women from the city who go with flowered baskets, and go in the company of each of the seven participating regions; The Central Valleys, La Sierra Juárez, La Cañada, Tuxtepec, La Mixteca, Isthmus of Tehuantepec and La Costa, playing music from their region.

There are musical presentations, dances and songs, in which each of the seven regions represents its cultural heritage and the streets and towns of Oaxaca are filled with life, various activities take place throughout the Guelaguetza, you can visit craft, gastronomic samples, and many cultural performances that will make you fall in love with Oaxaca.

What time will it be?

The show will start this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. in the Soriana Hiper parking lot, on Rafael Buelna Avenue, next to the Artisans Meeting tents.
