A few days before Carnival… neglect of Mazatlan infrastructure leads to collapse of city services

In the last three months, 39 leaks were documented throughout the city, 24 of drinking water and 15 of drainage, of which 43% have not yet been attended to or were left “halfway”

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- A few days before the Mazatlán Carnival takes place, if the state authorities confirm it, the port of Mazatlán is collapsed in public services; and it is that in the last three months El Sol de Mazatlá n documented 39 leaks throughout the city, 24 of drinking water and 15 of drainage, of which 43% have not yet been attended to or were left “halfway”

From November 2021 to January 2022, through the reports made by citizens to this communication medium, a total of 39 leaks were documented, both of drinking water (24) and drainage (15), in various sectors of the city.

This “historical problem”, as it has been called, has reached, for many Mazatlecos, its most critical point, because as never before, the city is “flooded” with drainage and thousands of liters of drinking water are wasted daily.

After carrying out a count of the registered spills, it was found that of the drinking water leaks, 15 have been repaired, four are “halfway”, since the concrete of the pavement has not been replaced, even though the 10 days have passed to carry out the patching, and five have not been repaired. Of the drainage leaks, seven have already been repaired, two are “halfway through”, and six have not been addressed.

FACTORS

The main factor that the Mazatlán Municipal Drinking Water and Sewerage Board attribute to the collapse of the hydro-sanitary system in the port is the age of its pipes; A large percentage of the network fulfilled its useful life, with more than 60 years of service, together with its manufacturing material: asbestos, slab, mud.

There is also the other big problem, the misuse of the drainage network; Citizens in general and businesses throw grease, organic and solid waste into the drainage system, which causes the pipe to become clogged and subsequently overflow.

There are other factors, like pressure. It should be remembered that after Hurricane “Nora”, at the beginning of September, several neighborhoods in the municipality lasted about a week without water, due to the rupture of a dam, and when the service was restored, the high pressure due to the water hammer ( a sudden increase in pressure caused by a rapid change in flow velocity in the duct) and the air remaining in the pipes, caused them to thunder.

CONSEQUENCES

In addition to the waste of the liquid, the bad odors, and the focus of infection that the wastewater represents, there is the formation of sinkholes.

The gases emitted by the drainage are very corrosive, both for the structural steel and for the concrete slab; the lower part of the asphalt layer deteriorates, the materials soften and then sinkholes come.

In the month of January, the Jumapam recognized that there are around 45 critical points with drinking water and drainage leaks in the city, at that time it also identified the urgency of repairing 180 leaks and the existence of another 180 more non-urgent.

Mayor of Mazatlan gives direction of public services to his driver

The mayor of Mazatlán assured that José David Ibarra Olmeda is a person of his total trust

Con MORENA viene el resurgimiento de Mazatlán: Químico Benitez – ALTERNATIVA SINALOA

the mayor of Mazatlán, Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres, appointed his private driver as director of Municipal Public Services.

This Monday, he took office José David Ibarra Olmeda, as head of the agency. He worked as a private driver for the personal van assigned to Mayor Benítez Torres.

“ He collaborated with me and I do the same thing that President López Obrador does, if I employ someone who does not fail me, I send those I already know, who are proven,” he explained.

When speaking of the profile of the new director of Public Services, he indicated that he is a great element, and he hopes that he will improve conditions in the city in terms of public services.

He stressed that he wants to improve things in Public Services, to have a cleaner Mazatlan, with more lighting and better parks and gardens.

Mayor Benítez Torres reported that the first litmus test for the new incumbent will be Carnival, for which he believes that he already has two sleepless nights, due to the challenge that it implies.
