Mazatlan, Sinaloa. – Considered an exclusive job for men, Erika has shown that women are not the weaker sex and that they can perform the same activities as the opposite sex, even carrying buckets of cement.

At the corner of Flamingos and Río Pánuco streets, in the Ferrocarrilera neighborhood, there is a woman who steals the glances of everyone who is passing through the place, since she is one of the few women who actively work as a bricklayer in a construction.

“I don’t climb (on the scaffolding) but my husband is the one who walks up and I help him pass the cement up; he carried it and with the rope I raised it and I like it, I like the work, ”she told the reporter while she wiped the sweat with the sleeve of her shirt.

Her story of working on construction sites began more than four years ago, when the sale of bread and tamales ceased to be remunerable for her family, making the decision to accompany her husband and work by his side.

“I’ve always told him ‘you know what, take me with you.’ In fact, he did not want me to work elsewhere, in other jobs the pay is very minimal and well, in these jobs here one earns a little more, it is worth the effort one makes, ”she explained.

Erika said she was proud of the work she does because she herself is aware of the inspiration she represents for other women who are also dedicated to construction or who have been discriminated against when trying to enter a job ‘dedicated only to men’.

“A little while ago I was watching the news and I saw a woman laying bricks on the heights and that motivated me more to give it a try and I say ‘no, I’m not the only one’, there are many women like that in the works (…). We all can, we should never say ‘I can’t’ ”, she referred while laughing.

“everything is possible. Before, they used to say no, that it’s men’s work and in fact they would not respect women laborers, paying us less, and I wondered why do men earn more than one? If one who is a woman does the same work,” she added.

Erika invited all women to arm themselves with courage and venture into what they like the most, because according to herself “it can be done for everyone”, demonstrating that there are no barriers for women.
