Mazatlan, Sinaloa. – Hand in hand with the Covid-19 pandemic, another cause of death has become more and more frequent, however, it has done so in a more silent and deadly way; suicide.
Due to the fact that the process of confrontation with the Ministry of Health has not yet concluded, the definitive rates of suicides in the country continue with figures from 2020 and according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, of the total deaths in the country, 7,818 were due to self-inflicted injuries, that is, suicide, which represents 0.7 percent of deaths and a suicide rate of 6.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, higher than that registered in 2019 of 5.65 percent.
Likewise, based on the study last year 2021 on the impact of Covid-19 on children and adolescents carried out by the Ministry of the Interior, the number of minors who have resorted to suicide has increased by 12 percent since the pandemic has become a global health problem.
Continuing with the INEGI figures, the population group between 18 and 29 years old has the highest suicide rate with 10.7 deaths per 100,000, followed by adults between 30 and 59 years old with 7.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Sinaloa has not been the exception in cases of reported suicides and the most obvious example is that of Mazatlán, which since the beginning of the week that runs from Saturday, February 5, 2022, there have been three suicides; the first of a 22-year-old girl, the second occurred on Wednesday 9 in a male and the third today, January 10, in the surroundings of Francisco Solís avenue.
