MAZATLÁN.- Good news to start 2022? Mazatlán has become the municipality with the lowest rate of poverty and extreme poverty in Sinaloa, as reported by the director of Welfare and Social Development, Tonatiuh Guerra Martínez.
According to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy, (Coneval) a program that measures poverty in Mexico and evaluates social programs and policies, the period that includes from 2015 to 2021, the port decreased to 1.8 in the percentage of poverty, which is equivalent to 7 thousand people living in poverty and 647 families have been taken out of extreme poverty.
“We contained it, we not only decreased but it did not increase, as in other municipalities in the state,” he explained.
In 2015, there were 142,247 people in poverty, by 2020 it dropped to 113,032 people. Regarding extreme poverty, in 2015 there were 7,226 thousand people, in 2021 it dropped to 6,613 thousand people. It is important to highlight that Mazatlán currently has 540 thousand inhabitants.
The municipal official indicated that this program is based on 6 social deprivation items such as educational backwardness, deficiencies due to access to health services, deficiency due to access to social security (items that are managed directly by the state and federal government) deficiency due to quality and spaces of the dwellings, deficiencies due to access to basic services in the dwelling and deficiency due to access to food (these correspond only to the municipality).
“Those that correspond to us have helped to decrease with the different social programs that we have been managing throughout the administration. The support was directed to where they had to go ”, he pointed out.
Currently, the most prevalent poverty in the municipality is that of services, families that do not have the basics such as potable water, drainage, and electricity, as well as paving and decent housing.
By 2024, there will be a decrease to a percentage of 1.6 with an investment of 33 million for the replacement of drainage and drinking water networks, in addition to 4 million pesos for the weight by weight program.
Salvador Alvarado is also located next to Mazatlán, in the municipalities that have the first place in the fight against poverty, but being a city with just 87 thousand inhabitants, it has no point of comparison.
