What is the REA
The Royal Spanish Academy, founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga, Marquis of Villena, is an institution with its own legal personality whose main mission is to ensure that the changes that the Spanish language undergoes in its constant adaptation to The needs of its speakers do not break the essential unity that it maintains throughout the Hispanic sphere, as established in the first article of its current statutes.
In accordance with this same text, the RAE must “also take care that this evolution preserves the genius of the language itself, as it has been consolidated over the centuries, as well as establishing and disseminating the criteria of property and correctness. , and to contribute to its splendor. To achieve these ends, it will study and promote studies on the history and the present of Spanish, will disseminate literary, especially classical, and non-literary writings that it deems important for the knowledge of such issues, and will try to keep alive the memory of those who, in Spain or America, they have cultivated our language with glory ». Likewise, the RAE, «as a member of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language, will maintain special relationship with the corresponding and associated academies ».
The Academy consists of forty-six academics by number, elected by the institution “from among the people it deems most worthy, by secret ballot and, at least, by an absolute majority of votes,” as established in the eighth and tenth articles of the current statutes.
As an addition to the article they add “valemadrismo” which they define as the “attitude of indifference, disinterest or passivity”, and incidentally add “valemadrista” as a colloquial expression of “worth mother”, that is, “not matter anything”
Cabús, butt, tapanco, valer madre, valemadrista, tablado, jet fuel, truck, texting, apa, ama, muddle, bicycles, ñáñara, and troque are some of the new voices that between 2019 and 2021 Mexico has contributed to the «Dictionary of the language Spanish ”(DLE), a work that in these last three years has incorporated 7 thousand 443 new modifications like never before in its history between additions of articles, meanings and amendments, due to the fact that the use of the language among Spanish-speakers has been impacted by digitization and technification.
In this new update of the DLE, the «amendment of meaning of complex form» of value has been incorporated into the mother voice, that is, to import very little or nothing, and to understand this sum of value, academics use two examples: «Ok mother what they say ”and“ mother what you do is worth ”.
And as an addition to the article they add “valemadrismo” which they define as the “attitude of indifference, disinterest or passivity”, and incidentally add “valemadrista” as a colloquial expression of “worth mother”, that is, “not matter anything.” There is also the addition of “ñáñara” which colloquially means “feeling of disgust or fear.”
In 2019, among the additions from Mexico to the Dictionary was “Cabús” which they define as the “last wagon of the freight train for the use of the crew,” but they also added “muddle” that is said of entanglement or confusion; “Truck” which is the van for transport or delivery, usually with the box open.
And of course, in 2020, among the 2,557 modifications that were added to the Dictionary, there was a strong presence of voices that had to do with the Covid-19 pandemic such as coronavirus, de-escalation, dystopian, antiretroviral, to which this year terms such as triage, vaccinology, emergency medicine and emergency medicine, among others.
The director of update 23.5 of the DLE, academic Paz Battaner during the presentation of these new 3 thousand 836 modifications that the work has had, said that this time the number of novelties is much higher than last year, but many more to the changes that were incorporated into the 2019 edition.
“In 2019 there were about 1,100 and about 2,500 in 2020,” said the academic for whom the growth of incorporations among the nearly 600 million Spanish-speakers is mainly due to “the digitization and modernization of society,” he said. Battaner.
That is why it is not surprising that again voices such as cyberbullying (harassment through the internet), webinar (training presentation that is transmitted via the internet, in which participants can make comments), cryptocurrency (virtual currency managed by a computer network that has an encryption system), bitcoin (digital currency), bot (a program that imitates human behavior), geolocation (determining the location of someone or something through a GPS) and cybercrime (a criminal activity that is carried out through the internet) are among the contributions of this digital edition that can be consulted from now on at dle.rae.es.
