Mazatlán takes over Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos as Favorite Destination

None of the main tourist cities in Mexico registered an average hotel occupancy higher than 58% between January and July 2021. The city with the highest registration was Mazatlán, Sinaloa, which barely reached 57.4% on average, according to data from the Secretariat of Tourism.

Mazatlán, Cancun, Piedras Negras, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta were the cities with the best average hotel occupancy between January and July 2021, but none of these cities managed to exceed 58% occupancy, according to data from the Secretariat of Sightseeing. 

The pandemic and the economic and social mobility restrictions that it has imposed continue to impact an essential sector for the national economy. 4 million people are employed in the tourism sector, in an industry that has come to represent almost 9% of the national GDP.

The list of cities with the highest hotel occupancy in Mexico between January and July of this year is as follows:

  • Mazatlan, Sinaloa: 57.4%
  • Cancun, Quintana Roo: 54.0%
  • Piedras Negras, Coahuila: 53.9%
  • Los Cabos, Baja California: 53.2%
  • Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco: 52.6%
  • Mexicali, Baja California: 48.2%
  • Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua: 46.6%
  • Tijuana, Baja California: 46.4%
