Mexico is a country that, due to the area in which it is located on the earth’s plates, presents very frequent tectonic faults, which in turn produce earthquakes, but what is an earthquake and why do they occur so much in Mexico??

According to the National Seismological Service (SSN), an earthquake or tremor is a sudden breakdown of the rocks inside the Earth, causing the release of energy which spreads in the form of waves giving rise to the movement of the ground.

Mexico is located on five tectonic plates: the Caribbean, Pacific, North American, Rivera, and Cocos plates, of which in Sinaloa the Cocos plate plunges over that of North America.

In Sinaloa, the area with the most seismic activity is in the north, since according to data from the geophysicist Juan Espinoza Luna, he pointed out for an interview with a local newspaper that the part of Ahome is located on the Farallón Basin, which is a system of faults. from the San Andrés fault.

By June 2021, 40 earthquakes had occurred in Sinaloa, of which the strongest would have been 5.1, the director of Civil Protection Francisco Vegas Meza mentioned in a press conference.
