The Secretary of Health of Sinaloa asked the population not to be alarmed because the black fungus is not a new disease

At least four patients related to COVID-19 infections developed black fungus in Sinaloa, reported the entity’s Ministry of Health.

The Secretary of Health of Sinaloa, Efrén Encinas Torres, explained that two of the patients died, and the other two are still hospitalized under medical treatment and are stable.

He asked the population not to be alarmed, because this condition is not new, since it occurs in patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, however, the cases worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I insist it is not to cause an epidemiological alert or alarm, this is a disease that has existed for many years, it occurs in immunocompromised patients, in diabetics, in those who take immunosuppressants, and so on,” he explained.

The black fungus attacks patients with immunosuppressed organisms, who have suffered from coronavirus infections or neglect their health, the official stressed in an interview for local media

It revealed that the four cases of mucormycosis were detected in patients with the SARS-COV 2 virus and diabetics from Mazatlán and Culiacán.

He added that the two patients who remain hospitalized are located in isolated areas and respond to medical treatment favorably.

What is black fungus?

The mucormycosis is known as “black mushroom” is caused by spores of a fungus found in humid environments such as soil, and even moldy food in the refrigerator.

This disease is not transmitted from person to person, since its only form of contagion is by directly inhaling the spores of the fungus that may be dispersed in the environment.
