Excessive charges for vacation rentals reign in Mazatlán

Of 5,000 estimated units in the port, between houses and condominiums, only 19 are monitored by Civil Protection

Mazatlan, Sinaloa.- In Mazatlan, there are 13,000 hotel rooms and about 5,000 units rent holiday, including houses and condominiums, most of which are unsupervised and recorded overcharges on holiday rental for tourists.

It is almost half, a figure that draws attention not only due to the unfair competition in this sector but also due to the lack of sanitary measures and compliance with them.

The Secretary of Tourism, Óscar Pérez Barros, pointed out that the regularization of this service is a step that has to be taken, although it is a bit complicated as it is private property.

He added that there are many service providers that are registered in the Secretariat and in the Tourist Attention and Protection Center, which, through Civil Protection, are monitored.

However, the number of vacation rental accommodation centers registered in CAPTA is minimal; of the 5,000 estimated units, only 19 are monitored.

“There are about 19 houses that I am aware of, there are definitely many more, but these are the ones that we have officially and the vast majority are complying with the protocols, in addition, we understand that they are used by groups of families who have coexistence in good shape. ordinary, “said Eloy Ruiz Gastélum, coordinator of Civil Protection.

He added that it is a bit difficult to detect these types of services because they are managed through a platform.

“What we do when we see a larger group of people who are not accorded to the area or who are not recognized by the neighbors as frequent neighbors, we go and talk to the person in charge of the group and they are asked in the best way to collaborate with the protocols and sanitary guidelines, “he added.

Despite this, as this is not a regulated service, it is out of the hands of the authorities in terms of surveillance and compliance with the protocols as happens and is required in hotels. Therefore, a sanction or restriction of service should also be applied.
