In the 30 years of its existence, 1 million 187 thousand 447 turtles have been incorporated into their natural habitat.
Officially and with an act of gratitude to the institutions that collaborate for the conservation of wild species, Acuario Mazatlán began the Permanent Protection Program for Sea Turtles that arrive on the beaches of Mazatlán, in its 31st edition.
As of this July 1 and until November, the personnel in charge of the area will constantly travel 21 kilometers of beach during the night shift, that is, from Olas Altas to Cerritos, their only objective, to protect the largest number of eggs to then incorporate them into their natural habitat.
The biologist Pablo Gerardo Rojas Zepeda, Director of the institution, gave a brief account of the history of this species, which is why he started the program and reiterated his commitment to this and other species of wildlife.
From 1991 to 2020, 16,139 nests have been protected, with a total of 1 million 493 thousand 101 eggs and 1 million 187 thousand 447 hatchlings have been released. The survival rate is 79.5%
The olive ridley turtle nests mainly in Mazatlán. And there are 5 main areas: Olas Altas, Playa Pinitos, Av. Del Mar, Zona Dorada and Cerritos.
The most recurrent nesting area is Avenida del Mar, between the monument to sea lions to the UADO.
More than 50% of the nests are sheltered here. The time when the highest number of nests is recorded is between 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and between 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The citizenry is called so that if you see a turtle spawning, stay away and call 911 or 669 981 7815 to report it.
