Worlds Best Rum awarded to Veracruz “Ron Villa Rica”

There is a Mexican rum that is the current world champion, the top winner of all the international rums that were presented in the most important blind tasting organized by the  International Taste Institute, in Brussels, Belgium. Ron  Villa  Rica  23 Years Gold Edition, obtained an award equivalent to the “Oscar” of the gastronomy and beverage industry, with three gold stars and the Superior Taste Award, the highest distinctions. 

This tasting is relevant for companies in 131 countries, which follow the results in a timely manner. It is a prestigious gala. The jury is made up of 200 chefs and sommeliers, from the institutions with the greatest impact in the world gastronomic sector, some are even celebrities, as they cook for Queen Elizabeth and the musician Elton John. Each member of the jury evaluates and rates the product on their own, in silence and without communication with other members. 

Originally from Córdoba Veracruz, Ron Villa Rica 23 years Gold Edition, has an incredible record, six years of champion in said event.

In the design of its bottle, there is a fine sheet of real gold, cobalt blue, and mineral pigments. Each bottle is numbered by hand, referencing the barrel and bottle number, just as a signature is displayed in a work of art.  

It is a drink from Licores Veracruz, a 100% Mexican company, which this year celebrates 70 years of continuous work; produces 40 brands of rum, mezcal, tequilas, and gourmet spirits that reach 30 countries including the United States, England, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Andorra, Ukraine, Belgium, France, and Austria, to name a few.

“This constitutes an overall triumph for the Mexican rum category over others in the world. It is a victory for Made in Mexico and we are very happy, ”José Villanueva, general director of Licores Veracruz, a national company with 70 years of family history based in Córdoba, said in a statement.

The altitude of the region and its humidity and temperature conditions have granted exceptional qualities to the award-winning rum, as well as the careful distillation and maturation process; It has been aged at 900 meters above sea level in Canadian oak barrels where wine and whiskey previously rested.

This year the jury was made up of 200 members of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI), the Culinary Academy of France, the Federation of Italian Chefs, the World Master Chefs Society (WMCS), professionals who participate in the elaboration of the famous Michelin Guide and other respected chef organizations. Hence, the awards are considered the Oscars in the high-end food and beverage industry.


Now, Ron Villa Rica 23 years Gold Edition is heading to compete in 2021 in search of obtaining the mythical Diamond Award from the International Taste Institute, for which it requires adding seven consecutive years as a winner of the Three Stars and the Superior Taste Award certificate. . Go Mexico!
