Culiacán, Sinaloa.- History ended up erasing it. Brick by brick its walls were brought down by machines and men. For more than 200 years the old house inhabited by “El Coloso” employees was erected on the same corner but now it is no longer so: it has been turned into dust.
Until a week ago, the house located on the corner of Antonio Rosales and Juan B. Sepúlveda, gave life to the Historic Center of Culiacán , a heritage protected by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) , which prepares a lawsuit against the owners to rebuild it.
The neighbors witnessed that the heavy machinery not only demolished brick, walls and rubble, but also a history and thousands of memories that will remain only in that, memories.
MEMORIES IN MEMORY
According to Don Ismael, a neighbor who has lived next to where the house was demolished for more than 50 years, shared that this construction had a long history, because according to his memories that place had been a colonial hacienda, later a residential house and the last decades a photography and pastry business, but it continued to have the same structure as it was built in the 19th century.
“This house in which I live is more than 200 years old, it belonged to my grandparents, they left it to my mother and then my brother took care of it. The memories I have is that it was a farm, the whole block was a farm, but they were making divisions and selling that is why many houses were built, but most of them have the same facade, ”he said.
Being one of the first houses built in Culiacán, the entire downtown area became part of the “old Culiacán” or the “historic center”, as it is known, where the owners cannot make adjustments to the facades because they are already patrimonies. protected.
“For example, my house inside is still the tile roof, but if you realize, these houses are made of pure brick with mud, in fact they do not have rods. That is why these houses have lasted many years. We cannot touch walls, much less the façade ”, he emphasized.
Ismael relates that since he was little he liked very much the structure of his house and of others more located by the first painting of the city, which, he regretted that most are gradually dying out, such is the case, of which it was demolished a week ago.
“Well, they are erasing like someone who says the history of the same city, the antiquity of how it was founded, what kind of constructions they were, and well that is what one says, I do not know in what head they get, knock down the large houses that are part of old Culiacán ” , he added.
HERITAGE IN RUIN
For Mrs. Sofía, another neighbor of the sector, who has lived in the center of Culiacán for more than 20 years, in a heritage acquired more than 90 years ago, but founded many years ago, she recalled that throughout her life she has had to witness how buildings that were more than 200 years old have collapsed and are now used for parking lots or shops.
“The truth is sad, many years ago I had to see how they demolished a house that was beautiful, they even said that inside it preserved furniture founded in the 1800s, I do not remember well, but we did see it fall, just as we saw fall this located by the Antonio Rosales and Sepúlveda ”, he quoted.
His house, which is also a protected heritage of the INAH, has not had any modifications to the facade but to the interior, as he shared that the walls were falling due to humidity and already represented a danger to his relatives.

PROTECTED PROPERTIES
The INAH delegate in Sinaloa, Servando Rojo Quintero, explained that the collapsed property was the home of the workers of a blanket and textile factory “El Coloso” located in front of the place that has already been destroyed.
He stated that the collapsed work had already been closed, due to the fact that individuals carried out the demolition without permission from the city council or the institute it represents.
“We are going to file a lawsuit. Because they did the work on their own, without any permission. Something like this happened in the municipality of El Rosario, and the owners were forced to rebuild it, not identical to how it was but with the general language. And that is our objective, what we want to achieve with this demand ”, he explained.
Rojo Quintero said that currently there are only around 460 protected heritage sites that are part of the historic center of Culiacán, since more than 400 have already been demolished.
He said that the house located on the corners of Antonio Rosales and Juan B. Sepúlveda had a cadastral value of one million 302 thousand pesos.
HISTORY
Culiacán has been characterized by demolishing its historic buildings. In 1948 it was demolished at the Apolo Theater located on Rosales street.
