Santa Catarina Juquila is the new Magical Town in Oaxaca

Santa María Juquila is a place of worship and pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Immaculate Virgin of Juquila, it is the fifth Catholic manifestation in Mexico with the largest number of devoted visitors.

Santa Catarina Juquila, a municipality on the Oaxacan coast, received the appointment of Pueblo Mágico by the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico.

Oaxaca has six Magical Towns in a wide range of tourist and cultural offer: Capulálpam de Méndez, San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Mazunte, San Pedro and San Pablo Teposculula and now Santa Catarina Juquila.

"We are celebrating because Santa Catarina Juquila joins these five Magical Towns that Oaxaca has, and without a doubt, we will continue working to build together this great brand in Mexico," said state governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa during the Ceremony of Appointments to Magical Towns.

The municipal president celebrated that the Ministry of Tourism has retaken this distinction under the new vision that frames the National Strategy of Magical Towns and added that the new appointment is also a recognition of the original peoples of Mexico, especially Oaxaca.

The Governor of Oaxaca also endorsed the commitment of his government to continue creating the infrastructure that allows visitors from Mexico and the world to reach each of these Magical Towns.

The federal Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, pointed out that this distinction recognizes the purest representation of the cultural and natural wealth of Mexico, also expressed that the Magical Towns are corners that contain lasting experiences over time.

"Domestic tourism will be the great engine in this stage of recovery of the sector, and in this dynamic the Magic Towns are configured, today more than ever, as pillars of the regional and national economy," he said.

The Sanctuary registers 1,092,184 visitors who spend at least one night in the destination, only in 2019 tourism activities in Santa Catarina Juquila generated around 731 direct jobs and about 1,828 indirect jobs.
