The US market continues to be the fastest-growing market.
Air operations in the state fell more than half during the health contingency due to COVID-19. According to the report “How are we doing in tourism?” from the state secretariat of tourist, between January and October of this year the Cancun airport lost 50 percent of its connections and for of Chetumal 62.3 percent. The US market continues to be the one with the highest arrivals, while the hotel occupancy had a reduction of more than 50 percent.
The report, which covers from January to October of this year, measures the decrease in various areas, such as arrivals by air, the participation of international markets in Cancun, passengers from international origin, visitors to archaeological sites, among others.
At the end of 2019, the entity closed with 26.4 million passengers in airports, 22.8 million visitors, 7.2 million cruise passengers, and more than 15 billion dollars in the economical spill. Riviera Maya with 6.5 million and Cancun with 6 million were the most successful destinations.
In a comparison of the months of January-October 2019 and 2020, a decrease of 54.9 percent of passengers in airports was reflected, since only in the first two months (January and February) there was an increase in the Cancun, Cozumel, and Chetumal airports.
Since March, the percentages registered a decrease of between 34 to 37.47 percent in domestic passengers and 43 percent in international passengers. While in April, May, and June, flights decreased between 98 and 100 percent.
In July and August the figures ranged between 38 and 70 percent, while in September, in the case of Cancun, they were able to recover until the gap was reduced to 21.66 percent in domestic tourists. In October, the variations were minimal compared to 2019, with less than one percentage point difference.
In general, from January to October, there was a 54.9 percent decrease in air operations: Cancun with 54.86, Cozumel with 52.98, and Chetumal with 62.30. In Cancun, 2,442,405 passengers have arrived mainly from the United States.
Regarding hotel occupancy, from January to March it continued to as normal, between 86.1 and 51.5 percent in Cancun, but between April and June it fell between zero and 5.7 percent; between June and September it increased to 32.4 and in October it grew to 38.1 percent. The annual average is 36.5 percent for Cancun; Cozumel, 33.2; Isla Mujeres, 35.2; Chetumal, 17.1 and Riviera Maya, 33.3.
The archaeological zones had a reduction of visitors of 71.2 percent, which means 1,903,939 fewer tourists compared to 2019.
