The First District Court based in Campeche granted to Mayan, urban and coastal communities, the definitive suspension of new works related to the Mayan Train in section 2, which runs from Escárcega to Calkiní, in this state.

Escárcega is a key point in the project for the current federal government because, in addition to connecting the Palenque, Chetumal, and Calkiní sections, the repair and maintenance workshops for the trains will be built up there.

This new judicial obstacle is added to the definitive suspension granted to the peninsular Mayan people of Ch’ol in the Bacalar-Escárcega section, last March to avoid a group of older adults to be from their properties.

Today, the Mexican Center for Environmental Law (Cemda) reported that upon resolving the new amparo claim, admitted last Thursday 3, the First District Court in Campeche granted the definitive suspension of new works on section 2 of the Mayan Train.

These works are being carried out by Operadora Cicsa, a subsidiary of Carso, of Carlos Slim, and the Spanish company FCC Construcción, in which the Mexican magnate is also the majority shareholder.

The section covers 235 kilometers crossing six municipalities and the construction time was planned for 28 months.

At the same time, the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Sedatu) and the Secretariat for Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) plan to invest 126 million pesos in urban improvement works in Escárcega, such as drainage and streets.

The entities obliged to comply with the judicial instruction are the Presidency of the Republic, Fonatur, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI), the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SC), and Fonatur Maya Train.
