In Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, there is an exciting activity that is capable of moving everyone’s feelings. It is about the release of newborn turtles in Playa Bacocho, just four kilometers from the main bay.

The liberation takes place every day around sunset, at approximately 5:00 p.m. However, you can arrive earlier and enjoy a clean beach, with crystal clear waters and an open landscape. Due to the nature of the activity, it is ideal for people of all ages and you can share it with family, friends, or partners.

Initially, you will receive a tour from those in charge of the Vive Mar Tortuguero Camp. There, you will learn more about this marine species, whose scientific name is Lepidochelys olivacea. Until a few years ago, turtle nests were common on the Oaxacan coasts. However, due to the gastronomic culture of the region, as well as natural predators, the species was endangered.

As an adult, a turtle can measure up to 67 centimeters and weigh almost 100 kilograms. Per season, a female lays between 80 and 150 eggs. The higher the temperature, the greater the probability that females will hatch from the eggs. To protect the nests, Vive Mar performs night monitoring and incubate the eggs in pens for 40 to 60 days.

Once your turtle has been designated, you can choose to name it. The newborn will be delivered to you in a gourd. You must be careful not to drop the little turtle and not to come into contact with your body, since you could contaminate its yolk sac, a reserve of nutrients that they have in their chest. If it becomes infected, your turtle could die.

Releasing your newborn turtles!

After approaching the beach a few meters, you should put your little turtle on the sand. Don’t hurry! Newly hatched turtles know how to reach the sea thanks to the sound of the waves. However, there is a first latent danger: seagulls. So the first minutes in freedom the little olive ridley will be put to the test (like all lives). Not all specimens reach the sea, so you have to be aware that the most beautiful and the wildest is experienced in nature.

However, if your turtle reaches the sea you will be able to appreciate the beginning of a possible long life since olive ridley turtles can live for at least 50 years. As if that were not enough, they are philopatric animals, so you can be sure that one day it will return to the beach where you released it to reproduce, and thus multiply the life cycle in which you were part.
