Mayan communities and civil organizations reported to the federal authorities that transgenic seeds are being grown clandestinely, especially in the municipality of Hopelchén.

According to Proceso newspaper, the complaints were filed on December 2 at PROFEPA and at the National Service for Health, Safety and Food Quality (SENASICA).

The Mayan communities of Hopelchén and the civil organizations Greenpeace México, Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental A.C. (CEMDA) asked the authorities to monitor the area near the Kombén ejido, Hopelchén.

They also recalled that in 2005, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) suspended the permission that the government granted to the multinational Monsanto, now Bayer, for the commercial planting of transgenic soybeans.

That permit was also revoked by Senasica on September 15, 2017, and the revocation was confirmed by the Specialized Chamber for Environmental Matters and Regulation of the Federal Administrative Justice Court on August 18.

The complainants accused that Hopelchén continues to be “the epicenter of illegality.” Likewise, they demanded that civil organizations and communities must carry out the inspection work that corresponds to the authorities and urged the authorities to act in accordance with the legislation.

The planting of transgenic seeds in Campeche could reach fines of up to 2,600,000 pesos for violations of the biosafety regulation in Mexico, they warned.
