Car theft drops in Mexico, lowest in 4 years

According to AMIS, these four states are home to the largest number of stolen units and 3 are the cars most searched by criminals; Although there was a decrease in cases, not even motorcycles escape.  

Recently, the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS), released the exploratory analysis it carried out on the theft of insured vehicles corresponding to the month of October 2019 to September 2020.   

One of the interesting results is that this crime decreased by 17.4% in the indicated period, with 73 thousand 223 units of insured vehicles being stolen, compared to the previous year, which registered the number of 88 thousand 688 cases. According to the records of the last 4 years, this cycle is the one with the lowest number of insured vehicles stolen.

The vehicle theft nationwide from 2014 to date, AMIS presented as follows:

  • 2014-2015, 60 thousand 472 units were reported.
  • 2015-2016, it was 65 thousand 881 which corresponds to 8.9%
  • 2016-2017, there were 84 thousand 239 cases, that is 27.9%
  • 2017-2018, 92 thousand 685 were reported, having 10%
  • 2018-2019, the registered units were 88 thousand 688, which indicates a -4.3%
  • 2019-2020, 73 thousand 223 cases, which indicates a decrease of -17.4%

On the other hand, there are four places where the highest rate of theft of insured vehicles is concentrated, since more than 60% of cases with the use of violence have been reported, in the State of Mexico, Jalisco, Mexico City, and Guanajuato of the 44 thousand 957 cases registered throughout the country. 

Despite the decrease in the cases registered at the national level, there is an increase in Guanajuato, Morelos, and Chihuahua.

What are the states with the highest rate of vehicle theft?

In this regard, the State of Mexico continues to hold the first place in car theft at the national level, registering 20,402 cases, however, in the last months that corresponds to October 2019 to September of the current year, it presented a decrease of 16% compared to the previous period. In the case of Jalisco, there are 10,663 cases that were registered, having a decrease of 16%. Consequently, Mexico City had 7,596 cases, with one decreasing by 24%. Following Guanajuato with 4,738, although here an increase of 4% was observed, unlike Puebla with only 3,914 and a considerable decrease of 37%. Finally, there is Veracruz with the amount of 2 thousand 977 stolen vehicles, having a decreasing variance of 22%.
