There will be Internet for all of Mexico in 2022: the promise of the SEP delays the goal of AMLO by a year, but it is still gigantic.

Although the promise came from the voice of the country’s president himself, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, there were voices that said that the expectation of having Internet for all of Mexico by 2021 was impossible. Now the head of the SEP, Esteban Moctezuma, postponed the goal for another year , in what is still calculated as a feat: all of Mexico will have Internet by 2022 .

The digital divide is one of the pending issues whose importance has only been highlighted by the pandemic. Congress has been pushing for months for the federal government to guarantee free Internet access to students of all levels, and some proposals have even required that there be electronic devices for the 32 million students in the country .

The head of the SEP did not guarantee such a thing, but in his appearance in the Senate he did say that the country will have full Internet coverage in just two years .

The problem of lack of connectivity caused that five out of ten households did not have access to digital and technological means to get educational materials online. Only 44.3% of households have a computer and only 56.4% have an Internet connection, according to the United Nations Program Office in Mexico . If we speak only of rural areas, the numbers are much lower; there it is estimated that only 20.6% have a computer and 23.4% of households have a network connection.

If it reaches 100% coverage, Mexico would potentially become one of the first to do so.

With a cut to 2019, South Korea leads the race with 96% coverage, the United Kingdom has 94.9%, followed by Sweden with 92.1% and Japan with 91.3.

Mexico’s coverage is currently at 70.1%. Historically, Mexico has grown annually in coverage between 2% and 5% of the total population. If the promise of having the Internet by 2022 is fulfilled, it means that the expectation is to achieve a 30% advance in just two years.

In Mexico, it is estimated that 8.5 million people are consuming the contents of Aprende en Casa through open television, as well as 7.5 million people with the help of cable television.
