Learn about the Mezcal Route of San Luis Potosí

1983

The word mezcal comes from the Nahuatl Metl, maguey; ixca, baking and mexcalli; that is, baked maguey. According to tradition, it was a gift from the Goddess Mayahuel sent through the God of Fire.

Mezcal comes from a type of agave plant that only grows in Mexico. The states recognized for the production of the drink are Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and the State of Mexico.

In SLP there is an important variety of mezcals in the Central and Altiplano areas, precisely in the municipalities of Charcas, Mexquitic de Carmona, Ahualulco, Moctezuma, the Delegation of Bocas and in the capital of Potosí.

The history of this ancestral drink in the entity dates back 150 years. Before the Revolution, the haciendas in the center and highlands of San Luis Potosí produced in large quantities, and in the wild the agave salmiana, the typical one of this region, which is the raw material to make the drink.

After the Mexican Revolution and with the agrarian distribution, many of these properties were abandoned and several factories closed, but others continued working. On the mezcal route, you can visit them.

Each municipality that produces the ancestral drink in SLP prepares tastings and other experiences to bring the drink closer to the public, forming routes among them where you can learn about the traditions and stories that provide identity to the people of Potosí. This tourist event has impacted on Potosí society and its surroundings due to the opportunity to taste and discover a variety of mezcals from the region.

On the journey through the Altiplano, you will be very close to the Magic Town of Real de Catorce, where visitors, in addition to tasting “ the drink of the Gods ”, will be able to learn about old farms and the process of making mezcal.

How to enjoy the potosina mezcal route?

We suggest starting the route through Venado, the municipality nestled in an eternal plain, where you can visit the Roberto Donis Cultural Center, which has a large collection of objects.

Charcas, as a second proposed stop, has more farms and the Temple of the Virgen del Rosario, patron saint of miners. On the same site is the Laguna Seca mezcal factory, which operates all year round and is open to tourists.

The Santa Isabel and Zaragoza de Solís companies are other unmissable places, where you can learn about the production process, honey extraction, wine, and agave game. You should not leave Charcas without trying the famous gorditas ferrocarrileras, typical of the place.

Following this route, you will also be able to get to know the community of Pocitos, where it is possible to taste the extravagant barbecued chinicuiles, better known as chile worms, part of the traditional gastronomy of the region. Nearby you can visit the “El Leoncito” nursery.

The town to follow the route is Salinas de Hidalgo, where there are old salt production rooms. Then the municipality of Ahualulco, the place where the so-called “Júrame” mezcal is produced, which was awarded a Gold Medal in the 2019 edition of the México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, in the Spirits category.
