At least six women were arrested on Monday, September 28th, by agents of the Tijuana municipal police, after demonstrating in favor of the legalization of abortion.
Five were arrested and sent to the Municipal Farm of Offenders (EMI) for administrative offenses, reported the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Tijuana.
One more was made available to the Public Ministry “for resistance to the arrest and outrages to authority.”
Crystal, representative of the feminist collective “Bloodys y Projects”, blamed Jorge Alberto Ayón Monsalve, Secretary of Municipal Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) for any damage.
This Monday, September 28, dozens of women marched from Insurgentes Boulevard, near Parque Morelos, to the clinic number one of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to demand the legalization and decriminalization of abortion.
The Municipal Police reported an attendance of 150 women, but other sources estimated twice as many participants.
The march was called by the groups “Las confidentas”, “Bloodys y Projects”, “Fuerza Violeta ITT” and “Colectivo Morras de la Periferia”, as part of the Global Day of Action for a Legal, Safe and Free Abortion, which consisted of various mobilizations throughout Mexico.
During the demonstration, five observers from the Baja California State Human Rights Commission (CEDHBC) were present but had already left when the six women were arrested.
According to the SSPC, they were arrested for “lighting a bonfire in the middle of the road and causing damage to structures.” It also reported that four municipal police officers were injured.
“Abortion yes, abortion no. I decide that ”and“ It is my decision without penalty ”, were some of the slogans that were shouted this Monday throughout the march.
Other women, in addition to speaking out in favor of abortion, brought signs demanding justice for Jessica González, a young woman murdered by her ex-partner in Michoacán and other victims of femicide.
“I am here for free decision, for my family, I have a daughter. I am here for future generations ”, declared one of the attendees.
The activists who called for the march requested that the event be exclusively for women and asked that the men, including journalists, leave, but at least a couple of reporters were attacked with pepper spray after refusing to leave the scene.
