Three years after the 2017 earthquake, the reconstruction has only been completed in 50 percent of the damaged temples in the Archdiocese of Puebla, revealed the Directorate for the Conservation of Cultural Assets of the Church in the entity.
Through a statement, it was stated that in another 34 percent of the cases the works are in process, and in the remaining 16 percent, there are still mechanical damage to the ground, structural damage, among others.
The priest Francisco P. Vázquez Ramírez reported that the earthquakes of 2017 and 2018 caused profound damage to the cultural heritage of the Archdiocese, especially in buildings, that is, buildings of a religious nature, such as temples, convents, and chapels among others.
The earthquakes of 2017 and 2018 impacted 621 temples within the State of Puebla, recalling that not only the Archdiocese of Puebla but also the Diocese of Tehuacán and the Diocese of Huajuapan de León, in Oaxaca, were affected.
He noted that according to the National Observatory of the Conference of the Episcopate
Mexicano , the most affected diocese in the entire country, with 584 damaged temples was the
Archdiocese of Puebla, temples located in 4 of 6 pastoral zones.
“The identification of the community with its temples is important because it is part of its cultural legacy; it is the center of identity of a community, it is where people’s faith is lived and manifested ”, he added.
This Saturday, September 19, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador scheduled a visit to Puebla to evaluate the progress in the reconstruction three years after the 2017 earthquake
