“What is being done is to restore the Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez elementary school because it is a historical building, everything had to be restored because it was very deteriorated”, says the school principal.

“The buildng was only painted from time to time, a scratch and painted, but not the whole thing until now,” acknowledged director Hermelindo Aguilar Prado.

“What is being done is a restoration work, because it is a historical building, everything needs to be restored because it was very deteriorated, the ceilings, the walls, everything was very deteriorated.”

In addition to the ceilings and walls, the electrical system will be renovated and will be equipped with brand new air conditioners.

It was necessary to request approval from the National Institute of Anthropology and History for the release of the permit, and much earlier with the same Ministry of Public Education and Culture to obtain the economic resources.

The work began in April, taking advantage of the fact that the 152 students were taking classes online due to the Covid-19 health emergency, and it is expected to finish by mid-August.

“After many efforts, an agreement was reached with ISIFE (Sinaloan Institute of Educational Physical Infrastructure) and barriers with INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) were eliminated in order to get down to work,” explained Carlos Meza, school supervisor.

When will children be back to school? No one knows yet, as it depends on how the current pandemic is overcome. But one thing is certain: when the doorbell rings again there will be a new building.

This beautiful building is 140 years old, and thousands of students have taken classes inside its classrooms.
