Lobster season is open in Mexico

As of 00:00 hours on Wednesday, July 1, the lobster catching season officially began in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, reported the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA). The activity will benefit more than 6,000 fish producers.

According to data from the Fisheries Management Plan, the states of Yucatan and Quintana Roo are the main producers of this species.

Each of these entities records 49 percent of the catches nationwide, while the other states as a whole contribute two percent.

According to CONAPESCA records, Quintana Roo has 447 minor vessels and 2,512 fishermen, and Yucatan has 511 minor vessels, 21 major vessels and 3,514 fishermen.

Nationally, the lobster fishery by volume is ranked 32nd in production and by value is sixth.

At the national fisheries export level, it is in third place and its main destinations are the markets of the United States, Hong Kong, and Vietnam.
