In a tournament stacked with world-class caliber golfers including Spain’s Sergio Garcia, former world number ones: Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth and current world number one, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer found himself at the top of the leaderboard, in second place when the final putts rattled home bringing to a conclusion a shootout that seemed like it was anyone’s tournament.

Rory McIlroy has started his 2020 season even better than his 2019 season, in which he won Player of the Year.

Ancer, currently sitting at 24th in the world ranking, finished at -21, one stroke off winner Web Simpson after shooting four solid rounds of 69, 64, 65, and 65. His final round card was bogey-free, 12 pars and 6 birdies. He is definitely looking to climb a few spots closer toward the coveted top ten in the world ranking. This weekend’s tournament, Charles Schwab Challenge, RBC Heritage Classic played at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head, South Carolina in the USA, was played with no fans in attendance due to the ongoing CoVid-19 pandemic.

One player, Nick Watney, had to withdraw after testing positive for the highly contagious disease. The twenty-nine-year-old Ancer was able to block out all the distractions to quietly climb up the leaderboard throughout the week.

Ancer played golf at the University of Oklahoma before turning professional in 2013. He has two professional wins including the 2018 Emirates Australian Open. Also in 2018, he represented Mexico in the World Cup and in 2019 represented the international team in the Presidents Cup.

In a February press conference during the WGC Championship in Mexico, Abraham explained how he played well under pressure and felt he played best when feeling that pressure. And Sunday was a perfect example of his ability to rein in his emotions and focus on the end result. For a talent like his, the future is unlimited and this won’t be the last time we see him competing for the championship trophy.
