Tourist drowns while diving off Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — A tourist died off the island of Cozumel over the weekend after he drowned while diving.

The drowning happened at Kilometer 7.5 in the southern area of the island. Paramedics were called to the beach outside a hotel at 10:19 a.m. where they found a 64-year-old man deceased.

Responding paramedic Marco Zavala verified that they arrived to assist a man who was reportedly on the shore of the beach, however, he was found without vital signs.

The man has been identified as Dr. Sergio López Padilla, a doctor vacationing from León Guanajuato.

One of the first to confirm the death was the driver Juan José Origel through his social networks, who was the cousin of the renowned Guanajuato dermatologist.

“In Cozumel my cousin Sergio López Padilla passed away this morning Rest in Peace!” Wrote the driver. 

Later, in an interview for TvNotas, he declared that his entire family was very sad about the death of his first cousin.

I loved him very much, he was an incredible person and his departure hurts me, he died of a heart attack while driving, and he loved to dive.  

He died doing what he liked the most, he had a heart attack, but I know he rests in peace because he was a great human being. He was a very prestigious dermatologist and he wished that his ashes they would be thrown into the sea and that would be the case, “he said.

He is the first reported drowning in the state since the reopening of hotel and tourist activities.
