Oaxaca exhibits the greatest biological diversity in Mexico

Oaxaca is the state with the greatest biodiversity in the country, with more than 8,400 known plant varieties and 1,431 vertebrate species. This Friday is the International Day for Biological Diversity, established by the United Nations (UN) in 2000 to be celebrated every May 22, in order to promote awareness of issues related to biodiversity.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), of the 22,350 known plant species in Mexico, 8,400 are found in Oaxaca. Similarly, the thousand 431 species of terrestrial vertebrates are equivalent to 50% of the total species present in the country.

Also, 736 of the 1,100 species of birds that live or migrate temporarily to Mexico inhabit Oaxaca, as well as 148 of the 451 mammals.

Regarding reptiles, including turtles, lizards, snakes, and crocodiles, of the 808 species registered nationwide, 245 are found in Oaxaca.

Of the 361 Mexican species of frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians, a third are located in the state’s mountains, forests, jungles, and coasts. Likewise, Oaxaca has 702 species of flowering plants and 157 endemic species of fauna.
