The chancellor explained that companies that try to avoid this practice “will have to face the law”.

The Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, assured that the companies that are in Mexican territory must pay their workers their full salary, regardless of whether the Covid-19 health emergency has been declared in the country.

“This declaration is a health emergency due to force majeure. Company that does not pay the full salary to its workers, will have to face the labor process in court, because the law is very clear, ”he explained at a conference in the National Palace.

The chancellor did not rule out that there are companies that will try to stop pying salaries during the health emergency. However, he explained that “there will be administrative penalties, sanctions, fines, closures or even criminal responsibilities.”

Previously, Ebrard reported that the General Health Council determined to declare a health emergency due to force majeure in Mexico as a consequence of the crisis caused by the new coronavirus.

The declaration of emergency for reasons of force contemplates the suspension of work in the public, private and social sectors in activities “not essential” for the economy and the well-being of citizens. This period runs from March 30 to April 30.

He also appealed to the social conscience of the population and companies to “be solidary” in order to deal with the emergency. “The more effective quarantine we can carry out, the sooner we will return to normal,” said Ebrard.

He insisted that if the call to suspend activities is not heeded, “there would be a year of economic difficulty and this could increase poverty in Mexico, if we do not heed the call to stay home.
