The growth of fiber optic in Mexico is unprecedented: 24.6% year- on- year according to the Federal Telecommunications Institute that has updated the data of its Telecommunications Information Bank, now with information as of the third quarter of 2019. At the same time, services to through copper pair cable decrease, now they are 6.9 million, with an annual decrease of 3.1%.
The migration to the new technology has made it possible for fiber optic accesses to be 4.6 million.
The figure that in Mexico the connection speed is becoming faster. Of the 19 million fixed internet service accesses, 17.6 million have speeds equal to or greater than 10 Mbps, while only 1.4 million navigate at speeds less than 10 Mbps.
In mobile phone access points, the story is another. It is not that 4G has reprehensible penetration rates, it is that in a year the data traffic through 4G only increased by 1.2%. With a cut to the third quarter of 2019, data traffic by 4G was 77.2%, slightly above 76% in the third quarter of 2018.
95 out of 100 Mexicans with cell phone lines
The same update details that fixed telephone service lines continue to grow, at an annual rate of 6.1% to reach 21.9 million services in September 2019.
In the mobile segment, growth is naturally much lower, since the penetration is exorbitant: 121 million lines are already estimated, which means that there are 95.7 lines per 100 inhabitants nationwide. Although SMS goes directly to oblivion, the minute traffic continues to rise, as it increased by 3.9% from 2018 to 2019.
Finally, from the gigantic mobile phone market, large operators retain almost the entire sector. The 19 virtual mobile operators in the country barely represent 1.5% of the mobile telephone service and 2% of the mobile internet service.
