However, the lowest temperature record in the country was reached in Chihuahua, in the small mountain town of Cumbres de Majalca, 47 kilometers from the state capital.
According to the report of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the town reached -11.6 ° C, the lowest officially registered during the first winter night.
This population is part of the municipality of Chihuahua, whose capital is the capital of the homonymous state, and in it is located the Cumbres de Majalca National Park, which has several steep canyons. The place was named a national park by then-President Lázaro Cárdenas around 1939.
It is a transition zone between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the mountains and valleys of the Chihuahuan Desert, and in it at some point, large populations of species such as the black bear and the Mexican wolf were found. Currently, the presence of species such as wild boars, pumas and desert rabbits has also been observed.
Almost a century ago it was considered a summer resort for the inhabitants of the city of Chihuahua. In 2016 and 2017 there was snowfall in the area.
The following locations with lower temperatures during the first winter night were Yécora, Sonora, where the cold brought the thermometer to -4 °; La Michilia, Durango, which reported -3.1 °; Muzquiz, in Coahuila, with -2.7; and San José de Gracia. Aguascalientes, with -0.4 ° C.
