Arturo García Velásquez and Javier Terrero, from San Felipe Jalapa de Díaz, were shot at point-blank range by armed men.

Arturo García Velásquez, mayor of San Felipe Jalapa de Díaz (Oaxaca), by the Morena Party, was murdered on Monday afternoon along with the local trustee, Javier Terrero, according to local media information.

The Quadratin agency reported that City Council workers were meeting this day at the offices of the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) to celebrate Christmas when a commando entered the public building and fired at point-blank range against Garcia and Terrero

Elements of the State Attorney General’s Office went to the crime scene to begin the investigation into the case.

Reactions

The National Association of Mayors regretted in its Twitter account the “sensitive death” of Arturo García and Javier Terrero and sent condolences to family and friends.

The federal deputy for Oaxaca, Benjamín Robles, of the Labor Party (PT), demanded an investigation and punishment for the murder of Jalapa de Díaz officials.

The municipal president of Asunción Nochixtlán, Liz Victoria, of the official Morena party in coalition with the PT and Social Encounter, described the murder of her companions as “cowardly.” “We demand that the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office promptly clarify the facts and punish those responsible,” he tweeted

Detention of Velasquez

On October 24, García Velásquez was arrested by members of the National Guard along with two police commanders for his alleged involvement in crimes of forced disappearance. The mayor of Jalapa de Díaz was seized weapons for the exclusive use of the Army and cartridges, according to information from the weekly Process.

A week later, the mayor was acquitted of those charges by a judge, who dismissed the evidence presented and ordered the release of Garcia and Javier Torrero.
