The last name Osuna is one of the most representative of Sinaloa since it is estimated that of every thousand inhabitants at least 12 carry it in their name

Coming from Santander Spain, the Osuna arrived in Mexico in search of fortunes and arid lands in which to develop agriculture and livestock, as well as to encourage different kinds of trade, mainly located in the town of La Noria, in Mazatlan, Sinaloa.

Some of the oldest settlers, who keep the last name in that community, argue that each of the Osuna that have existed in the country are descendants of La Noria.

Large and important haciendas were built with the arrival of the first Osuna to the town, thanks to the great commercial boom and an extensive assortment of products mainly from Spain such as fabrics, cosmetics and all kinds of household goods.

Due to this, the three main groceries of La Noria belonged to the Osuna, obtaining great popularity among the community, since these shops were located between the two main streets of the town, serving the passage of people who crossed the community daily.

In those years, La Noria was a city in which it was popular to find different workshops of saddlery (work leather goods), jewelry and a small pharmacy in which some medicines were made and prescribed. Such was its development that it became officially governed as a Municipality until 1886.

The arid lands and the level of commerce that it possessed allowed a new activity to be born: the cultivation of agave for the elaboration of mezcal, thus building the distillery of Don Liberato Osuna.

Quickly all the hills of La Noria were cultivated of blue agave, coming from the town of San Sebastián (now Concordia), being born in 1876 the elaboration of the recognized agave distillate ‘Los Osuna’.

This industry served as a support for hundreds of families due to the high demand for mezcal, which led to the passage of more wine stores over time in the region. Most of the businesses belonged to the Osuna family, among which were ‘Las Tatemas’ by Andrés Osuna, ‘Santa Leticia’ by Jorge Luis Osuna and Osuna, and ‘Santa Clara’ by Daniel Osuna; being the latter the one that to date manages to preserve its commercialization, as well as the artisanal process.

That is why the Osuna were one of the most important pillars for what is now La Noria, also resulting from this cultural mix great women and men who have given renown to this town, among which are composers, musicians, politicians and even queens of the Mazatlan Carnival.

Among the musical composers of some songs and even renowned races, such as the Corrido de La Noria, are Don Andrés Osuna and Don Gabriel Osuna, who was also the municipal president of Mazatlan.
