It was recently acquired by Thor Equites Group to make a 40-room accommodation

More than 20 years ago the few residents of the then remote area of Tulum, in Quintana Roo, saw how a huge residence was built facing the sea. Rumors said that the property had been sent to be by Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar and that he himself had one night arrived in a plane to see how the construction was going.

The building of magnitudes and exorbitant luxuries was abandoned after the death of the capo and was managed among several owners and businesses that were not clear or prospered, until now. Half of the construction, called Casa Magna, was acquired by Thor Equites Group , a hotel company that plans to make the residence a luxurious hotel, for people who like exclusivity and are curious to know how the famous drug trafficker vacationed.

Initially, the construction consisted of three hectares and two residences with an approximate value of 17 million dollars. But over time it was divided into two. One of the parts became the Casa Malca hotel, owned by Colombian collector Lio Malca. The place is famous for its beach club and for exhibiting famous works by artists such as Keith Haring, Marco Brambilla or Andy Warhol.

Thor Group’s new accommodation in Pablo Escobar’s house will be next to Malca’s, and will consist of 40 luxurious rooms, a spa, and high-end stores, for which the hotel group will invest 100 million dollars, plus the 17, 5 that cost them what has already been built.

Their choice, they said in a statement, is due to the popularity and prestige that the area has acquired in recent years ” Tulum is the most elegant destination now in all of Latin America, ” said Joe Sitt, president of the company. This hotel will be added to those already owned by the firm in Los Cabos, Playa del Carmen and Mexico City (next to open).

The story of Pablo Escobar in Tulum

The construction of Casa Magna began in 1992 at kilometer 9.5 of the Tulum-Punta Allen road, one kilometer from the access to the ecological reserve of Sian Ka’an and 15 from the archaeological zone, facing the blue sea of the peninsula. Then, Pablo Escobar Gaviria had a relationship with the Mexican narco Amando Carrillo, “El Señor de los Cielos”, leader of the Juarez Cartel, so it seemed strange to the tenants that the new Colombian vacation residence was in Quintana Roo.

The Medellín drug trafficker was killed by the Colombian police in 1993, and the fate of the house became doubtful. A year later, he was linked to the family of Carlos Salinas de Gortari, former PRI president of Mexico, but the version could never be confirmed.

In 1997, the construction was seized by the Prosecutor’s Office and was abandoned. Six years later, it was delivered to the Insured Assets Administration Service who in 2005 gave it to the Amansala company, which enabled it as Casa Magna Amansala Eco Chic Resort, which operated until 2008.

That year, the Ministry of Finance determined that Sandra Eufrocina Chávez Vega, a Sinaloean woman who was never known, said that the house was his and that he had accredited it through Carlos González Niño, a lawyer from Jalisco. However, there was no trace of him either. Subsequently, the property was operated by several hoteliers, but there is little information about it.
