The residential internet service offered by the company will have a capacity of 50mbps speed and will be available in nine states of the Republic.
In Mexico, the issue of connectivity is on the table of private organizations such as government, according to figures from the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), 88% of the population has a connection to a mobile network, within this percentage, 30% they cannot connect to the internet because they have no resources to connect and only 2% have the resources but not the coverage.
For this reason, Viasat wants to change that with a new service called residential Internet which will offer up to 50mbps of speed in those areas where the internet does not yet arrive, but where there is a purchasing power on the part of the users.
“We are working on a service project with unlimited browsing and messaging […] we are pushing in homes that do not have good internet service or that do not arrive,” Kevin Cohen, global director of Community WiFi at Viasat, told Expansión.
This service will be extended mainly in nine states of the Republic in which they stand out: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí. It is expected that by mid-2020, there will be coverage throughout the country, including Mexico City and Mexico.
In addition, Cohen explained that the satellite has coverage in all states, but at the moment it will only operate in these nine entities.
Users who are going to acquire the service will be able to choose between the four plans that Viasat offers, which range between 1,499 and 2,699 pesos per month.
The business model of this service is an antenna installed at home and the service is provided to those with an average purchasing value.
“Our service is like satellite television, people are already used to having an antenna in their home, we are providing a service for their needs and benefits,” the manager said in an interview.
In order to have this residential internet service, there will be several sales channels as well as on their website. “We have a large market in Mexico, it is one of the most important commercially available in the world for satellite internet, our expectation is to reach thousands of homes to connect hundreds of thousands of Mexicans,” said Kevin Cohen.
