AMLO reveals that Mexico’s sovereignty was at risk with the original USMCA agreement

“There were chapters that compromised, that damaged our sovereignty and we do not accept them … In the energy sector, basically in oil,” said the president.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed that a year ago, when the government of Enrique Peña Nieto presented the original draft of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada USMCA (T-MEC), Mexico’s sovereignty was at risk.

“ There were chapters that compromised, that damaged our sovereignty and we did not accept them… In the energy sector, basically in oil and that was established in the treaty, that oil is from Mexico, it is from the nation, it was not like that, there was a chapter so thick, but we’re going to talk at the time, ”he said during the morning conference.

The federal president also thanked the government of the United States and Canada for accepting that the USMCA be signed in Mexico and said that it is very likely that on Tuesday he will speak by telephone with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and that he may do the same with Donald Trump.

“We are very grateful to the government of Canada and the United States, especially President Donald Trump who respected our right to act in a sovereign manner as we respect the sovereignty of the United States and Canada,” he said.

“I clarify, the decision of the congresses is missing, including the Mexican Congress, especially the Senate, but since we are working together with the senators, we already have the consent,” he added.

López Obrador said that the USMCA will not affect the business sector, “on the contrary, it will mean more investment, more jobs and better paid, good wages, benefits for workers and our sovereignty is safe, that this is very important, That was the border that was drawn and that is achieved. ”

“The USMCA is necessary, convenient, help,” he said.

Once it is signed, we are going to talk about the details to show that it is convenient for us that it was a very good negotiation, a good agreement, I am going to tell you in detail because we have been with this for over a year and it has not been easy, but in the end, the result is good not only for Mexico, it is good for all three countries, ”he added.
