Lessor known Remedios Varo is one of Mexico best painters

She is described as one of the most interesting exponents of the surrealist movement and even, there are those who consider it better than Frida Kahlo … will it be?

If someone asks you to choose the best work, between Frida or Remedios, which one would you choose?

Surely many would choose Frida Kahlo for being the most renowned painter of that time and movement, however, that of Varo Remedios, with less popularity, is considered among the experts as the best.

Born Spanish, on December 16, 1908, Remedios became a Mexican national and began working in painting from an early age, when she turned 15, encouraged by her father, she entered the San Fernando Academy in Madrid. In 1932, he settled in Barcelona and worked as an advertising artist. Shortly after, it was introduced to the surrealist circle of André Breton, as mentioned by Algarabía.

Remedios died of a heart attack in Mexico City on October 8, 1963, leaving a vast legacy, which was collected in 2000 by her husband, Walter Gruen, and donated to the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico. The collection was declared a Mexican artistic monument on December 26, 2001.

Currently Frida Kahlo’s work is much better known and valued than that of Remedios; However, there are many people who insist on fighting both painters, saying that one is better than another.

Despite the above, in their times, Varo and Kahlo were part of one of the closest circles of the surrealists, so they never imagined that decades later, they would be put to compete over who is or not the best surrealist, or at least that is what the Belelu portal publishes.

In this context and to remember his excellent work, at De10.mx we have compiled some of his best surrealist paintings, and we invite you not to miss them in the following image gallery …
