Cancun hotel under investigation for safety protocol violations after fire

Cancun, Q.R. — Several hotel guests were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in the Cancun Hotel Zone broke out during the early morning hours of Thursday, leaving the hotel under investigation for safety protocol violations.

Emergency 911 received the report of the fire, which occurred on the seventh floor inside the Occidental Tucancún Hotel in the Hotel Zone around 2:00 a.m. Firefighters managed to quell the fire, however, more than 20 guests had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

An investigation by la Dirección de Protección Civil continues since guests say they were not alerted by the sound of any fire alarms. Antonio Fonseca León, director of Protección Civil, says they are investigating whether or not the hotel violated security and safety protocols.

Reports say that an ice machine on the seventh floor of the hotel was the cause of the fire. A total of 21 people were treated for smoke inhalation.
