The Hotel Association of the Riviera Maya (AHRM) said that before the bankruptcy of travel giant Thomas Cook, the oldest in the world and the second most important tour operator worldwide, the priority will be to support tourists to return to their countries of origin, so they are working with the British authorities and other nations to coordinate the necessary actions, and avoid further damage to tourists stranded in the Mexican Caribbean.
“We are working with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA for its acronym in English) to help the clients of Thomas Cook that we have lodged in our establishments before the problems that they are having to return to their countries. The first thing is to support them in their return, regarding bankruptcy we will take the legal actions that assist us, but for the moment the priority is the guests, ”said Conrad Bergwerf, president of the AHRM, who is on a promotional tour in Europe with Governor Carlos Joaquín González and the general director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo (CPTQ), Darío Flota.
The hotel manager estimated that there could be thousands of British tourists and other countries currently vacationing in the Mexican Caribbean and that they were affected by the bankruptcy of Europe’s second-largest tour operator to the Caribbean, with the United Kingdom being the main issuer of tourists Europeans towards the Riviera Maya.
Conrad Bergwerf stressed that hoteliers in the Riviera Maya are coordinating efforts with the United Kingdom Embassy and other federal authorities to expedite the transfer of these tourists affected by the closure of operations of the wholesaler, which caused the involvement of 600 thousand tourists throughout the world, of which more than 150 thousand are British.
It should be noted that the Cancun International Airport, second in national importance for the number of passengers, said that personnel from the United Kingdom Embassy and the Civil Aviation Authority are serving the affected tourists in Terminal 4 to return them. as soon as possible to their places of origin. The air terminal revealed that airlines such as Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways continue to operate normally with flights to the United Kingdom.
In that sense, the British authorities indicated that the CAA will have dozens of charter flights to transfer the affected customers free of charge, while passengers who have purchased packages are protected by an insurance plan
