It could touch La Paz, with a population of about 300,000 inhabitants, during the early hours of Saturday, where a “very strong” impact due to wind and rain is expected

The erratic trajectory of Hurricane Lorena, category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, remains in awe to the northwest of Mexico while continuing to cause heavy rains to extraordinary rains in that region of the country.

After touching land on Friday in the south of the Baja California peninsula near Cabo Pulmo, state of Baja California Sur, the eye of the hurricane took off from the coast, staying very close to it in waters of the Gulf of California , he told Efe the general coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Jorge Zavala

“His career has been extremely erratic and uncertain and has been varying, and the latest estimates predict that it will go along the Baja California Peninsula, ” said the Doctor in Physical Oceanography.

However, he added, “the probability of entering the Gulf of California and crossing into (the state of) Sonora is also quite important.”

For now, the concern is that it affects small populations along the eastern coast of Baja California Sur, “and especially La Paz, which is where there is the greatest population,” Zavala said.

He said he could play La Paz, with a population of about 300,000 inhabitants, during the early hours of Saturday, where a “very strong” impact is expected by wind and rain.

“If you go deeper into the Gulf of California, you have favorable conditions for its intensification,” he said, adding that if it moves further west it would be affecting the north of the state of Sinaloa and the state of Sonora.

Zavala stressed that despite not being a category 2 or more hurricane, “it can cause damage from very heavy rainfall” that could cause flooding and flooding of rivers and streams, as well as high waves and sea penetration in coastal areas.

“It is very important that people move away from streams, that the streets that become true streams do not try to cross them either by car or on foot. And that they move away from areas where there may be flooding,” he said.

According to the SMN report issued at 22.15 local time (03.15 GMT on Saturday), Lorena is located 65 kilometers east-southeast of La Paz, Baja California Sur. The meteor moves north-northwest at 13 kilometers per hour, generating sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour and gusts of 155 kilometers per hour.

The SMN maintains a hurricane surveillance zone in Baja California Sur from San Juan Evangelista Bay on the east coast to Puerto Cortés in the west; and due to tropical storm effects from Puerto Cortés to Puerto San Andresito on the west coast.

It also extended the surveillance zone due to hurricane effects from Altata, Sinaloa, to Bahía Kino, Sonora.

It also forecasts wind with gusts of more than 80 kilometers per hour and high waves of 3 to 5 meters on the coasts of Baja California Sur and Sinaloa, and wind with gusts of more than 50 kilometers per hour and high waves of 1 to 3 meters in Sonora and the north coast of Nayarit.

Therefore, the agency recommended to the general population and maritime navigation to take extreme precautions for rain, wind and waves, and comply with the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System.

Before the warnings of authorities and the SMN itself, citizens took extreme caution and, according to local media reports, panic purchases were recorded in the municipality of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.

In the state of Sinaloa, the State Civil Protection Commission reported on Friday the suspension of classes in 18 municipalities, which includes a total of 506,000 students who will not attend class. The same measure was also carried out in Baja California Sur, suspending classes at all levels.

Lorena was formed on September 17 and has had erratic behavior. It advanced as a tropical storm two days in parallel to the coasts of western Mexico and made landfall this Thursday as a category 1 hurricane in Jalisco, leaving heavy rains, some floods and people evicted from their homes for safety.

On Thursday it degraded to a tropical storm and regained hurricane strength this Friday.

With Lorena and tropical storm Mario, which remains far from the national coasts, 13 of the 19 cyclones that the Meteorological forecast for the current season in the Pacific have already formed.
