With a potential of nearly 100 million baby boomers in North America, Quintana Roo has the potential to become the “Mexican Florida” and, in fact, has already started receiving some retired Canadians in Bacalar, said Javier Govi, president of the Mexican Association for Retirement Assistance (AMAR).

According to him, there are other areas of Mexico where retirees have already begun to settle, such as Mazatlan, Mérida, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Puerto Escondido, in Oaxaca.

Interviewed in this city, where he came to witness the signing of the collaboration agreement between the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI), Cancun chapter, and the Institute for Development and Financing of the State (Idefin), which allows making this region the “Mexican Florida.”

“As a state, Florida, is the place that has the most retirees. We want to continue promoting the interest of making this destination one of the most important in Mexico in terms of retirement, ”he added.

According to him, the agreement establishes that one of the fundamental issues is the use of land, since there is no specific land use for communities in retirement and, on the other hand, that there are tax benefits for different investment funds to be Interested in the area.

“It is important to understand that, from the outset, you have to define an area because another of our proposals is that a good part of Cancun is characterized as a friendly city with the elderly. It is necessary that, from the outset, an area be classified as such, ”he stressed.

“The agreement will allow us to move with greater freedom. At the national level, we may not see the impact that international investors and developers have that there is political will. In many states, if they don’t see the political will, they fall back and the investment doesn’t flow, he added.

Consider that in the United States alone there are 78 million baby boomers. We estimate that in Canada there are 12 million, plus Mexicans, about 3 or 4 million with possibilities to invest, make a potential of 100 million in North America.

He also said that a good platform is needed from a geriatric and gerontological point of view, since there are not many specialists, even less bilingual and bicultural, because not only do they need to speak English, but also to understand how the American and the American are managed. Canadian, that they know their culture. Similarly, specialized nurses are needed to take care of the treatments and the recovery period.

One of the questions that are being requested is to detect possible failures of the Development Plan, which are not adequately visualizing the growth of that industry.

“It is clear that, if there is no adequate legal framework to allow the investment to flow, the agreement will allow us to advise the projects,” he concluded.
