Chapultepec Forest, in Mexico City, won first place as the Best Urban Park in the World 2019, recognition given by the World Urban Parks organization.
The Chapultepec Forest of Mexico City received the gold medal in the International Prize for Large Urban Parks 2019 by the World Urban Parks Organization, and to celebrate, the city government said it will annex approximately 105 hectares to the fourth section of the Park.
“Once again it will become a space for recovery, environmental and cultural recreation, as well as for the future of our country and, obviously, for our city,” said Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
The fourth section of the forest is currently used by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), and will be declared by the city government as open recreational space.
“There is no higher honor I can receive as mayor than to feel the vibrations, love, and affection I feel for something as important to the city as the Chapultepec Forest,” he added.
Later he continued saying that, in addition to the prize, he is excited about the future of the park, “which looks bright, since it includes both city and federal resources, such as the Los Pinos Cultural Complex”.
He explained that the fourth section continues to grow, “and what is more, it is very important that an artist as renowned as Gabriel Orozco be chosen as coordinator of this cultural and environmental restoration, along with a team that belongs to the Chapultepec Forest.”
The progress of the annexation of the new section of the park will be announced as work progresses.
“We will meet every 15 days with the federal Ministry of Culture, which is also part of this project. Several departments of the city government and even the president monitor progress, and soon we will be ready to make a presentation. ”
With regard to recognition, he specified that the forest was evaluated along with urban parks around the world. “The natural wealth in the Chapultepec Forest represents the natural wealth of central Mexico, our city, what it has been and what it can be.”
