Mazatlán_ In eighty percent, the record of straws found and collected by the Operator and Beach Manager in the port beach area has decreased, said Rogelio Olivas Osuna, Director of the OAP.

Olivas Osuna informed that, to collect up to 200 straws on a cleaning day, in the last three months only 65 were collected. Result of the modification to the state waste law, which prohibits any service provider from delivering straws; and the proper functioning of the awareness campaign launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

«Following the amendment of the State Waste Law, in which service providers are requested in this case to hoteliers and restaurant owners who no longer use the straw (…) following the campaign this year we have decreased 80% of the straws found on the beach, especially in the area of ​​the boardwalk and in the tourist area where the hotels are located, has dropped considerably, ”he said.

Some of the options that are used to replace this product that is harmful to the environment and its species are biodegradable straws made from avocado and rice bone, or permanently used straws made of stainless steel.
